Second Year Unit Subjects

SEMESTER ONE

Paul’s Letter to the Romans

This in-depth expository study of the contents of this most important Pauline Epistle produces a good understanding of the basic foundations of the church. Special focus is placed on the righteousness of God and its relation and influence on a believer in Christ Jesus.

Lead in Teams

Interactive work groups are designed to foster student’s care and respect for one another, appreciation of each other’s differences and to offer practical opportunities for leadership of ministry teams and the development of teamwork.

Christian Ethics

This subject will define what is meant by ethics in general and Christian ethics in particular. In a series of contemporary situations the student will be taught the basic biblical principles to determine their stance in these matters. It will provide the students with the scriptural basis to help them differentiate and discern the different ethical reasoning of secular and humanistic thoughts, ideas and opinions from the traditional scriptural Word of God.

Effective Evangelism

Students will examine evangelism in all its different forms and expressions to determine the levels of effectiveness in fulfilling the Great Commission. It will show the student how to plan, organise, structure and conduct a successful evangelistic mission around the biblical model as shown by Jesus. Several different forms of evangelism to cater for different cultures, age groups, social and religious demographics and the spiritual climate will also be studied to determine the most effective methods.

Students will also study the five-fold ministry office of the evangelist. The specific characteristics of this ministry office will be examined in the light of biblical evangelists and contemporary evangelists of today. The evangelist has a unique position in the body of Christ, as a very open and public type ministry and is therefore subject to specific temptations which will be covered in this subject.

Faith Library

A detailed examination of the lives of biblical and other renowned people of faith in order to locate their successes and failures in applying faith to their lifestyle. Included is additional teaching and practical application in the area of faith as a lifestyle by way of group discussions, answering questions and sharing testimonies concerning the application of the principles learned.

Students will learn to further develop a balanced practical faith. Various faith topics will be researched and discussed as a study guide to develop a mature understanding of the application of biblical principles of faith in life and ministry.

Ministry and the Holy Spirit

This is a time of ministry to the Lord and to one another in the Holy Spirit under the supervision of the VLBTC staff. Students will journal their experiences within ministry context and situations. It also includes guest ministry and DVDs.

Marriage and Family

Students are made aware of the unique character and importance of the home and family in our society and ministry. Students learn the biblical purpose of marriage, how to love one another, effectively communicate, establish priorities and understand others. Singles are encouraged to develop godly relationships and to live in God’s perfect will. Training and establishing children in biblical standards leads to peace in the home.

Practical Counselling

Students are given practical instruction concerning the methods and application of bible-based counselling required by the local church today. The practical application of these methods produces a greater sensitivity to the needs of others, more efficient listening skills and more effective and efficient ministry to people needing assistance.

Understanding Intercession

An in-depth study of the scriptural foundation for the prayer of intercession. Biblical examples are examined and studied.

Eschatology

This subject studies the return of Jesus and other end-time events from prophetic scriptures of the Old and New Testaments – especially Ezekiel, Daniel and Revelation. As expounded, the revelation in these books becomes open and clear to all, thus dispelling the fear and uncertainty that is often associated with this area of teaching. Students are helped to face the events of the present age with confidence and look to the future with optimism and victorious hope.

Biblical Interpretation

Students obtain a working knowledge of the principles of biblical interpretation. Application of these principles is encouraged in the student’s devotional and preparatory study of God’s Word. The subject covers major types and shadows from the Old Covenant which ultimately find their substance in the New Covenant.

The Proverbs

A study of the Book of Proverbs which contains godly wisdom that is superior to natural wisdom and is supernatural in its source and power. Students are encouraged to review their way of life in the light of this Word and make adjustments as the Holy Spirit leads them to higher wisdom.

Christian Leadership

A presentation of the biblical and practical principles concerning ministerial leadership applicable in the daily lives and ministries of God’s servants.

Understanding the Anointing

Students learn about the anointing within and upon believers, as well as the corporate anointing. They will be taught and trained to recognise and flow with the anointing of the Holy Spirit in their lives and ministry.

Apologetics

Christianity is a reasonable and defendable faith. Students are helped to understand and give a logical defence of their faith while confirming and extending their understanding of the truth and power of the gospel.

SECOND YEAR UNIT SUBJECTS

Diploma of Christian Ministry

SEMESTER TWO

Angels and Demons

A biblical study of the supernatural world and its inhabitants, which includes both angels and demons. The origin, roles and limitations of these two groups of beings are studied with special emphasis on the believer’s authority in relation to both.

Missions

Missions are studied showing their importance and impact on the evangelism of the world. Ministry by those who are involved in this field is included to bring home the reality of this vital area. Opportunities are available for some or all students to become actively involved in this ministry.

Lead in Teams

Interactive work groups are designed to foster student’s care and respect for one another, appreciation of each others differences and to offer practical opportunities for leadership of ministry teams and the development of teamwork.

Church Government, Management and Administration

This practical subject for both leaders and followers covers issues such as leadership structure, authority and delegation, the importance of clear communication and other basic management principles and practices. The importance of having a God-given vision is highlighted along with methods to communicate this vision to others.

Church History

This subject provides an overview of the Christian church from its inception to the year 1900. It majors on events as recorded in the New Testament and some of the significant personalities and events of the ensuing centuries which helped to shape the Church as we know it today.

It also examines selected events and personalities in the church during the 20th and 21st centuries. Special attention is given to significant revivals, the emergence of the modern healing ministry and the development of the Pentecostal, Charismatic and Word of Faith ministries.

Homiletics

A study of the basic principles of the art and science of preaching as it pertains to the ministry. Personal application of these principles follows the study, which allows the students to organise themselves, their materials, and their God-given abilities in order to present the message of the gospel in an effective manner.

Each student will be given 10 minutes to minister to their fellow students with a word of teaching, preaching or exhortation.

Ministry and the Holy Spirit

This is a time of ministry to the Lord and to one another in the Holy Spirit under the supervision of the VLBTC staff. Students will journal their experiences within ministry context and situations. It also includes guest ministry and DVDs.

Practical Ministries

Each week students are asked to use what they have learned during their time at VLBTC in real ministry situations. Guidelines are given for each area of ministry. Students are supervised in this ministry situation and are later critiqued on their effectiveness and given correction, further instruction and encouragement in their pursuit of excellence.

Practice Intercession

This subject allows students opportunity to practise intercession in small groups. Opportunity is given for students to lead groups in prayer and to analyse and discuss group dynamics with help from the faculty.
Opportunity to not only lead but to give a short teaching on some aspect of prayer is given.

Acts of the Apostles

This is a study of the early history and growth of the church from the ascension of Christ through its spread to Rome. It illustrates how the empowerment of believers by the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost and through persecution, the church spread from Jerusalem to the uttermost parts of the earth.

Ministry Gifts and Leadership

This subject will offer students an understanding of the ministry gifts of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher and how they operate in our lives today. Students will have the opportunity to learn from a solid biblical perspective more about the five-fold ministry and it will also cover the Office of Helps, the Ministry of Tongues and Interpretation, Exhortation and the Ministry of Giving.

Paul’s Letter to the Colossians

A study of Paul’s letter to the Colossian church with its purpose of declaring the Lordship of Jesus Christ and to inspire love and unity among believers. These doctrines and concepts must be understood to prevent the church from being drawn into heresy, religious pluralism and a dilution of truth for the sake of unity.

Fruit of the Spirit

This subject studies the fruit of the spirit as mentioned in Galatians 5:22, 23 and their importance to the believer. This fruit is received in seed form at the new birth and must be nurtured and developed in order for it to mature and become a lifestyle to the believer.

Practical Healing

Practical training and on-the-job opportunities are provided to apply the principles of biblical healing. By using biblical principles for divine healing, Jesus Christ is shown to be alive and healing today just as He did in bible days.

The Sermon on the Mount

This subject investigates the many aspects of kingdom living as taught by our Lord Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. These practical teachings will be examined and personal application made in light of the age we live in.

Note: VLBTC reserves the right to vary the programme outlined above in response to the leading of the Holy Spirit or unforeseen changes in circumstances and/or recognised required training.
